Minnesota has a STATEWIDE mandatory building code administered by the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) since 1972. Current edition: IRC 2020 and IBC 2020 with Minnesota amendments. Minnesota Residential Energy Code (MREC) based on IECC 2018 with MN amendments. Climate zones 6A (most of state) and 7 (northern tier) require deep frost protection (42-60+ inches). ICE BARRIER is required statewide on roof eaves per IRC R905.1.2. Strong energy code compliance. 87 counties. Minneapolis and Saint Paul have additional requirements.
