North Carolina has mandatory statewide codes administered by the NC Department of Insurance, Office of State Fire Marshal. The NC Building Code Council adopts and amends codes. Current codes are based on 2018 I-Codes with NC amendments (NC State Building Code). Climate zones range from 3A (coastal/southeastern) to 4A (piedmont) to 5A (western mountains). Hurricane-prone region covers the entire state east of I-85 corridor. Wind-Borne Debris Region (WBDR) applies to coastal counties.
