LOCAL OPTION (municipal adoption). Per N.D.C.C. Chapter 54-21.3, jurisdictions that elect to enforce building codes must adopt the State Building Code but may amend for local needs. State/local government buildings and schools must comply statewide regardless of local adoption. Based on 2024 I-Codes (IRC, IBC, IMC, IFGC, IECC, IEBC) effective Jan 1, 2026. Administered by ND Dept of Commerce Division of Community Services. 53 counties total. Climate Zones 6A (southern) and 7 (northern), both Very Cold. CRITICAL STATE REQUIREMENTS: (1) Residential Sprinkler PROHIBITION per N.D.C.C. § 54-21.3-03(4) - cannot require sprinklers in 1-2 family dwellings, (2) Ice barrier required statewide, (3) Frost depth 48-54+ inches, (4) Agricultural buildings exempt per N.D.C.C. § 54-21.3-04(3). Electrical (NEC 2023), Plumbing (UPC 2018), Fire (IFC 2021) codes regulated separately. Design wind speed 115 mph. NOT hurricane-prone.
